This event at The Museum of the City of New York discusses the impact of queerness on creation. Three artists sit down to talk about how their work is affected by their sexual identity and their experience in society.

Thursday, February 9, 2017 – 4:00 pm to 6:45 pm

Jesse Harrod is a contemporary artist who pushes conventional limits by using traditional “hobby” materials such as fringe, sculpey, and sequins to question and comment on queerness and gender. This program at Museum of Art and Design includes a demonstration of her working on a new macrame piece using paracord. Afterwards, a tour of Grossens exhibition accompanied by an art historian.

In this Program, Elissa Auther curator and scholar for Museum of Arts and Design will provide insight into the history of craft in the 1960’s by touring the Francoise Grossen exhibition.

Charles Platt collages found clothing items to create images that evoke an idea of a person or experience in this show entitled “encrypted messages” at Freight and Volume. Platt creates a new point of view of everyday shoes, overalls, wallets, and shirts by deconstructing them and presenting them in a new context.

tANJA gRUNERT presents “Laleh Khorramian: Skerts” who creates kimono influenced fabrics tributing the unseen forces at work in our universe. A futuristic blend of patterns and styles painted and dyed on 100% natural silk come together in this vibrant display of fabrics.

In this series titled, “Self Portrait” at CRG gallery, Channing Hensen uses wool and synthetic fibers to create knitted paintings of his own DNA patterns.

Diedrick Brackens displays multicolored woven tapestries influenced by living in Los Angeles in this group show titled, “Los Angeles Bound.” at Thomas Erben Gallery. His work plays with light and texture as well as the scarce incorporation of objects such as zippers and plastic hands. These aspects come together in an abstract and aesthetically pleasing woven painting.
