The first week of summer camp was exciting for all! The campers visited the Georgia O’Keeffe Exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum where they learned about the inner and outer persona of Georgia O’Keeffe. Inspired by her art, the weavers got to make their own kimonos and the surface designers created their own scarf bags that exhibited the inner and outer persona just like Georgia O’Keeffe!

During our field trip, the campers explored different areas of the museum; from the Infinite Blue exhibit to The Dinner Party exhibit. They saw video installations, a room full of blue artifacts, floral and landscape paintings, ceramic pots and more. The kids drew replications of what they loved and loved the simplicity of Georgia O’Keeffe’s dresses.

For the weaving project, the weavers created mood boards that illustrated their choice of colors and their feelings. The surface designers wrote on a black rayon cloth all the words they identified with.

The campers used bleach pens to write how they felt about themselves.

By the second day, the kids had already learned to weave at a rapid pace! They patterns like the plain and twill weave and even created patterns of their own! The surface designers learned through silk painting how to create secondary colors like purple and green. Some of their favorite colors!
