Cycle 3 of TAC Afterschool’s Sewing and Fashion class focused on projects inspired by famous artists. For their final project of the cycle, students designed their own Pollock-inspired fabric and used it to create a garment!

On the first day, students learned about action painting and looked at examples by artists such as Jackson Pollock, Sam Francis, and Shozo Shimamoto.

We also learned how to appropriately use the materials available for our action painting project, such as multi-colored dyes, paint brushes, popsicle sticks, yarn, and spray bottles!

Next, we got started designing our own fabric!

Students dipped yarn into dye and dragged it across the fabric to create interesting and spontaneous prints.

Students also used spray bottles and popsicle sticks to create stenciled shapes.

Some students chose to create deliberate patterns and designs while others explored their textures more instinctively. Our close-knit class allowed students to share ideas and techniques they discovered through experimentation and inspire each other to think outside the box.

At the end of the day, we set our fabrics to dry in preparation for the next step. During our next session, students used the sewing machines to transform their fabric into a trendy skirt!

Once we were done sewing, we tried on our skirts and showed off our finished products!
